Sigiriya

ree

A very popular tourist attraction - with good reason. Formed from the magma of an extinct volcano, Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is an ancient rock fortress constructed in the 5th century and still houses remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains. It’s a bit of a climb but the historical sights and astonishing view from the top makes it worth it.

Dambulla Cave Temple

ree

A World Heritage Site, this royal rock cave contains over 150 beautiful Buddha statues and paintings, some of which were first created over 2000 years ago. Dambulla is thought to have been a place of worship since the 1st century BC and this Cave Temple pays homage to this magnificent history.

Minneriya National Park

This picturesque national park is the largest known meeting place of Asian elephants in the world. May to October is the best period to make this trip - in August and September each year during the dry season, wild elephants from the surrounding wilderness in search of food and water make their way to the shores of the Minneriya Reservoir adjoining the Minneriya National Park, which is a truly awesome sight.

Pidurangala Rock

It’s a bit of a challenging climb but this rock, located in the vicinity of Sigiriya, offers some magnificent views at its peak, which makes the scrambling ascent to get to the top totally worth it.

Polonnaruwa

Once a bustling commercial and religious capital of Sri Lanka, the city’s golden age can still be viewed through the ruins that remain. Hundreds of ancient structures, tombs, temples, statues and so much more make it worth the trip.
