Activities

Hit the Beach!
Unfortunately, Negombo’s beaches aren’t the cleanest but is still good for a walk on the sand and to soak in some sun. The beaches close to resorts tend to be better maintained.

Dutch Fort ruins
It’s actually called Negombo Fort, but people usually refer to it as the Dutch Fort. Constructed in 1672, the Gate and the Clock Tower are the 2 main beautiful remnants of it. Next to the Fort, you find the picturesque Anglican Saint Stephen’s Church.

Hamilton Canal Ride
Spend about an hour riding along the waterways of the city and the Lagoon - in addition to seeing the Lagoon, houses and fishing boats, it’s a great way of cooling down in the tropical heat.

St. Mary’s Church
Thanks to mainly the Portuguese, there are some beautiful churches around, with St Mary’s Church being the biggest cathedral. There are over 20 churches, making Sri Lanka’s Little Rome the centre of the country’s Catholicism.
Angurukaramulla Temple
A spectacular temple, its entrance is shaped as the mouth of a dragon. It is over 300 years old but well preserved, with many murals, sculptures and paintings inside depicting scenes from the ‘Mahavamsa’, an epic poem that relates the history of Sri Lanka.
